Cheap Thrills rents and sells period, vintage clothing from the 20’s to 50’s.   The owner, Todd, is again offering us a 20% discount on costume rentals! He says that the average Victorian ensemble, (dress and accessories such as hat, umbrella, etc) runs for approximately $50-125. Call ahead and tell him what you’d like, and what size you wear, and their staff assembles an outfit for you and quotes a price. Costumes are kept for 3 days. Hours: Sunday-Tuesday: 11-6; Wednesday – Saturday: 11-7.

Owner Julia Harrington operates this business from her home; she asks that groups of 5-6 please schedule with her by phone, for a fitting and costume selection. She is again offering us a 20% discount on rentals- must mention Stroll Through History for discount. Costumes may be picked up 2-3 days prior to the event, and kept a week! A check or credit card number are held, not run, as a security deposit. Has men’s attire as well; top hats, cutaways, etc. Has a wide range of period-styled outfits, including Victorian through 30’s, with all slips, jewelry, gloves, etc, included in price, averaging $60.   No walk-ins; appointments are Mon-Sat, 11-7. Closed Sundays.

Capital Costumes: 8121 Madison Avenue, # F1, Fair Oaks; (916) 961-2769   Capital Costumes has been in business for 100 years, getting their start renting out costumes from a trunk on a stage coach, in the early 1900’s. They advertise they carry hundreds of costumes, for rent or sale, and have a good selection of 1880’s-1920’s. The shop is open year-round. Hours: Monday – Friday: 10-6; Saturday 11-4; closed Sundays.

Owner Dawn Cornsilk says they have a large selection of 1880’s pioneer style cotton dresses (Cooler!), renting for $20! Also renting Victorian ensembles of dress, hat and shoes for ladies ($40-50), and men (jackets, vests, pants, hats and shoes, Max $50). And she’s again offering us a 15% discount!   Hours Tuesday-Friday 11-6; Saturday 10-4; Closed Sunday/ Monday.
